Endurance Karting

Endurance Karting from the perspective of Team Canberra

Round 3 – Newcastle

Posted by admin On December - 16 - 2008

350 Lap
Qualifying – Chris, Eric, Gil.
Qualified 18th from 29 starters, the combined time of 3 drivers was used to allocate positions on the grid. Chris went out first on a new set of slicks that we forgot to scrub in during practice, he could only manage a 60.5 sec lap, 2 seconds slower than his practice times. Eric then went out and did a 58.7. Gil was the next to go out, he managed a 58.9 even after T-boning a kart which caused considerable damage. Nose cone pushed in and under and bent both stub axles (he said ‘it wasn’t my fault!’).

Race – Eric started.
Wet Wet Wet! All race plans thrown out. Changed tyres to wets after the warm up proved that the track was too slippery for slicks. The race started in atrocious conditions and it only got worse from there. All was going well even with a few spins that were unavoidable (so Chris said). Got as high as 12th before it all went wrong. First of all the kart started to lose brake pressure, fluid leaking from caliper. Had to top up with brake fluid at each driver change. Then just after Eric got in for his last stint one of the motors died. Came in, flushed carby, dried out plug and went back out. Lost a lot of laps but we were back in it. Found out later that the main fuel supply tank had water in it, some one forgot to put the cap back on! Finished the race in 18th position.

Summary:
Overall, very happy with outcome considering the problems we had. All 3 drivers drove really well and with a little luck should finish higher up the field in coming rounds. Love the wet, it was a lot of fun!
