Endurance Karting from the perspective of Team Canberra

Posted by admin On January - 11 - 2009

Formed in 2008 by : Eric Finney and Gil McLaughlin
Drivers: Eric Finney, GIl McLaughlin, Chris (Ceej) Johnson
Kart number: 88
Frame: Birel Powered by: Honda
Race: B Grade
Series: TEKA (The Endurance Karting Association)

Eric had been driving for Kartland Racing since 2006 and purchased the kart from Kartland at the end of the 2007 season.

Gil having no racing experience at all (apart from the lounge chair) jumped at the chance to join Eric as a co-owner/driver and Team Canberra was born. After a few practice sessions at the local Canberra track it was decided that a third driver was needed, hence Chris Johnson joined the team (Eric’s nephew). Both Eric and Gil thought this was a great idea as Chris being the youngest could do all the heavy work and any extra driving stints if and when the old boys started to get a little weary, Chris doesn’t think much of the heavy work (what teenager does) but loves the driving. He has proved to be an enormous asset and was on the pace from the beginning, his first drive was in the wet at Oran Park and surprised all with his skills having never driven a kart before.

2008 has proved to be a huge year for Team Canberra. We all still have a lot to learn not only about driving but also about kart setup, this will come in time, as one leading A grade team member said ‘it has taken me 8 years to get here, you have to be patient, it will come with experience’.

Special mention also to all the teams and officials at TEKA who have helped us out in our first year, it has made the whole experience of racing even more enjoyable.

See you at the track!
